Welcome and how to get started!

#1

A very warm welcome! We are a community of growers of all levels of experience, growing in cities all over the world, brought together by our shared enthusiasm for growing edible plants, and the wide ranging benefits it can offer.

This forum is here to help us share our experience, to learn from each, to explore this amazing hobby, and to help us make connections.

If you are new to growing, please don’t be shy - experienced growers love sharing their knowledge and we all remember starting off (many of us started with just one or two plants in pots - often not that long ago!).

To help you get started - as with anything new -it is worth investing a few minutes to learn your way around. I hope you’ll find it easy and intuitive to use - but there are a few things that are different from Facebook and other platforms so a bit of knowledge goes a long way.

Here are some tips to help you get going:

  1. Once you are on the site, click on the heading “Categories”, to see an initial list of categories for the site (this will evolve as we use it), including one called ‘How To Guides’.

Click on the ‘How To Guides’, and look for details of how to update your profile, and add a photo.

Add two or three sentences for your profile. And your location - as it’s useful to know where each other are growing (just town and country is perfect - and perhaps your first part of your postcode if in UK). Include as little or as much info in your profile as you want to. It would also be brilliant if you can add a photo of yourself - as it just makes it feel more personal and friendly if we can all see who we are talking to.

  1. Once you’ve done that, go back to the home page (you do that by clicking on the Vertical Veg icon in the top left) and open the post, ‘Hello, introduce yourself’. To add your introduction, simply press reply and type your message. If you want to add a photo (always interesting and helpful to see other growing spaces), there are instructions on how to do this in the ‘How to Guide’ section. To add a link, simply paste the link in and a preview will appear.

  2. Then, simply join in any discussions you want to, or begin a new topic on anything related to growing food in the city (or eating and the other benefits) or to ask a question or share something you’ve found or learned. Your contributions in these early days will really help this community to get off the ground.

  3. This is a pilot forum, we are learning as we go! Your comments and feedback are invaluable to help shape it. Please post these directly in the forum under Site Feedback or you can message me direct if you prefer.
