Supermarket ginger

I planted a supermarket piece of ginger in a pot of compost and now have a plant with the biggest leaf about 40 cm high. I have been told that ginger doesn’t like full sun, but grows best in shade, and in fact this plant is growing in the cold greenhouse but completely shaded by the unkempt vine above it. (Must get in there to tie a few vines out of the way.)
A bloke at the allotments (when I had one) grew all his ginger needs this way, shade being provided by his benches and out of the sun. My supermarket lemon grass is also doing well.
